Summer 2020 Important Update

Dear Kandalore Families,

With these extraordinary times comes significant change – change to our priorities, our routines, and, most of all, in our ability to connect in person with our loved ones. As the COVID-19 pandemic has evolved, I have been overwhelmed by the number of families who have reached out to tell us how much camp means to their children and how hopeful they are that we will once again be able to offer them another unforgettable experience this summer at Kandalore.

For this reason, it is with deep sadness and great regret that I am writing to you today. The Government of Ontario has made the unprecedented decision to close all overnight summer camps for the foreseeable future. Because of this, Kandalore has no choice but to cancel all of our Summer Programs for 2020.

It breaks my heart to be writing this letter to our community. I know how much our campers, staff and all of their families love and need camp, now more than ever. Be assured, we will be doing everything we can to keep our Kandalore community connected. Connection and friendship are vital during these challenging times. We are looking at developing virtual ways to meaningfully engage with our campers, staff and their families this summer. Please stay tuned as we further develop these opportunities.

In the event that the Government of Ontario lifts or loosens the current restrictions that prevent camps from operating, we will investigate running the summer programs, but only within the parameters of being able to deliver such programs safely and feasibly.

We will be refunding currently registered 2020 families 100% of their fees, including their full deposit with administration fees. Please look for further communication about the specifics of your family’s refund coming to you shortly.

We all know Kandalore is more than a place. It is a community and a feeling. For me, Kandalore is a place where I see kids truly connecting with each other – face to face, without the barriers of technology. It is a place where I see kids arrive hesitant and shy and leave beaming, independent and confident. It is a place where I see my own children, like our campers, being showered by love, connection and challenges from the moment they leave our cabin each morning. Many of your children have attended Kandalore for so long, they won’t be able to remember a summer without it, and the thought will be devastating to them, especially as camp has been a beacon of light for them during this challenging time. Please know we will do all we can to help support them in whatever way we can. I know that our community will remain strong and connected and will continue to support one another until we can be together again on Lake Kabakwa.

Q & A

  • What has caused you to make the decision not to operated this summer? Why are you making it at this time?

    The Government of Ontario has made the unprecedented decision to close all overnight summer camps for the foreseeable future. Because of this, Kandalore has no choice but to cancel all of our Summer Programs for 2020.


  • Will Kandalore be providing full refunds?

    Yes, Kandalore will be providing a full refund of all fees paid for all currently registered 2020 families. Given the unique circumstances we have changed our policy and will also be refunding the normally non-refundable administration fee.

  • Do I need to do anything to receive a refund?

    No. Kandalore will automatically process refunds for all families who are eligible for a refund and you will not be required to request your refund. 

  • By when will I get my refund?

    You will receive an email outlining the refund process shortly. Refunds should take approximately one week to be processed. Once every family has received a refund, a confirmation email will be sent to you with an updated account statement. 

  • What if I cancelled before the pandemic?

    Full refunds are only being issued to currently registered families and families who cancelled due to COVID-19 after March 12th, 2020. 

  • Will I be refunded my deposit if I cancelled before summer 2020 programs were cancelled?

    Yes. You will be refunded your $500 deposit/administration fee if you cancelled due to COVID-19 on or after March 12, 2020. If you cancelled before March 12, 2020 you will receive a refund of your deposit less the administration fee.

  • How will I be refunded if I did not pay by credit card?

    You will be refunded by cheque soon after receiving our email outlining refunds. However, due to expected postage delays, we request that you wait at least two weeks for your cheque to arrive.  Please notify us if you haven’t received your cheque within two weeks of our refund email.

  • How will I be refunded if my credit card expiry date has changed since my last payment?

    If your credit card has expired, a member of the Kandalore team will reach out to you for your updated payment information. 

2021 Registration

  • What will the process be for 2021 Registration?

    Kandalore will open a simplified, priority registration process for all currently registered 2020 families for summer 2021. This process will be available until September 1, 2020. Your camper(s) will be guaranteed a space in the same session as 2020. You may place your camper on a list for an alternate session, and we will be in touch to confirm a space is available after we have confirmed all registrations for families previously registered in that session.

  • Will you guarantee spaces for 2020 families?

    Yes. Kandalore will guarantee spaces for currently registered 2020 campers in the same session for summer 2021 until September 1, 2020. 

    For campers who will be moving in to our Leadership Programs next summer (those born in 2004 and 2005), as usual, there will be an application process. Therefore, we are not able to guarantee spaces in these programs. More information regarding the 2021 Leadership Program application process will be sent to you in the coming weeks.

  • If I am adding a sibling for 2021 will they also have a guaranteed space?

    Yes, Kandalore will guarantee spaces for summer 2021 to the siblings of currently registered 2020 campers.

  • When will 2021 registration open?

    Currently registered 2020 families and families who cancelled due to COVID-19 will be contacted shortly regarding 2021 registration. You will receive an email communication with more information regarding our registration process. 

  • Is there a deadline for 2020 families to be guaranteed their space in 2021?

    Yes. If you are a 2020 registered family or a family who cancelled due to COVID-19 and would like priority registration with a confirmed space, please register online before September 1, 2020. We will re-open our standard registration process on September 1. 

  • What will fees be?

    If you are a currently registered 2020 family or a family who cancelled on or after March 12th due to COVID-19, you will be able to register for the 2020 summer fees if you register before September 1, 2020.

  • What if we weren’t registered for summer 2020 and want to register for summer 2021?

    Families new to Kandalore or those who had not yet registered for summer 2020, will be able to register when our standard registration process opens on September 1, 2020.  

  • What if the 2020-2021 school year is altered or shifted due to COVID-19?

    We cannot say how this would impact our summer program at this time but we are currently making considerations to address this scenario should it arise.

Summer 2020 and Beyond

  • Will Kandalore be running any alternative summer programming?

    We are currently looking into different ways to meaningfully engage our campers throughout this summer. This may include offering online programs to select age groups. Please stay tuned for more information!

  • Will I need to pay anything or register to be involved with summer programming?

    At this time, we are still considering different options for programming and will be in touch with families as soon as we have more information to share.

  • Is there a chance camp will operate in August?

    At this point we don’t have an answer to this question.  We believe it is highly unlikely, given the restrictions that we anticipate will be applied to summer camps. The safety and wellbeing of our campers, staff and community is our primary concern and we will only re-open if we can operate our program safely.

  • Will you consider running parts of camp/reduced camp (i.e. trip)?

    At this point we do not expect to be running camp in a modified or reduced capacity.  However, we will consider alternate programming if we are permitted and can ensure the safety and wellbeing of our campers, staff and community. 

  • Will there be camp clothing this year and can I use my early-bird credit?

    No. There will be no camp clothing available this year. Since we are refunding the full amounts paid, there will be no early-bird credit.

  • Will you still have a holiday skating party this year (COVID-19 permitted)?

    Yes. If we are able to do so, we look forward to getting together with our community during the holidays.

  • Do you foresee any long-term impacts on Kandalore in the future?

    Though this summer presents us with unprecedented and unforeseen challenges, we are planning for a variety of operational considerations moving forward and expect to run in full capacity next summer and thereafter.

Leadership Programs – LIT, Explorer 2, Explorer and Pathfinder

  • Will my LIT/X2 be eligible for staff next year?

    Anyone turning 19 or older in 2021 is eligible to apply on staff for summer 2021 at Kandalore.

  • Will my Explorer/Pathfinder be eligible for LIT/X2?

    Yes. Any leader turning 17 or older in 2021 is eligible to apply for our LIT or X2 programs.

  • Will second year senior be eligible for Explorer/Pathfinder?

    Yes. Any leader turning 16 or older in 2020 is eligible to apply for our Pathfinder or Explorer programs.

  • Will there be any make-up programming so that my child feels ready for their next step at Kandalore? What will that programming look like?

    We are currently looking into different program options to support our leaders in their next steps at Kandalore.   

  • Will you be offering the course credit?

    No. Unfortunately we will be unable to offer credit courses this summer.

  • My camper was supposed to be an Explorer/Pathfinder – what happens now? Will they automatically be an LIT/X2 next summer?

    We will endeavour to do all we can to enable our 2020 Explorers to participate in their Explorer trip in 2021. We are looking into making different program options available. Our 2020 Pathfinders are encouraged to apply to become LITs or Explorer 2s next in 2021.

  • Will my second year senior automatically get an Explorer/Pathfinder spot?

    Second year seniors will still need to apply to the Explorer/Pathfinder program. However we will be opening up our leadership applications earlier to registered 2020 campers in order to have priority in the application process. Acceptances will be rolling and spaces will be filled on a first come first served basis.

  • When will Leadership applications open for 2021?

    Leadership applications for currently registered 2020 campers will open this summer. For campers not currently registered, Leadership applications will open at their usual time in October.
